Prof. Chan was born and educated in Singapore. His medical training was at the University of Singapore. He has received post graduate training in internal medicine in London, in dermatology at St Johns Institute of Dermatology, STI at St Stevens Hospital, and public health in HIV at UCLA. His dermatological career started at the Middle Road Hospital in the 1980s and continued at its successor, the National Skin Centre. He was appointed Director of the NSC from 2004 to 2014, where Prof. Chan is currently a Senior Consultant and Medical Advisor. He is also a Senior Advisor to the National Healthcare Group. Prof. Chan was the inaugural Chairman of the Chapter of Dermatologists, as well as the first Executive Director (Clinical) of the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS). Prof. Chan’s clinical interests include STI, HIV, cutaneous infections and diseases of hair. He has maintained strong research interests in STI, public health and disease prevention. Prof. Chan has been the Head of the National STI Control Programme since 1992. In 1988 he founded Action for AIDS, a non-governmental organisation and is the current President, AfA was awarded the WHO Dr Lee Jong-Wook Memorial Prize in Public Health in 2010. In 2009 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Gold Medal by Royal Society for Public Health, in 2016 the National Medical Excellence Award Clinician. Prof. Chan was also a recipient of the ILDS Certificate of Appreciation and an Honorary International Fellow of the American Dermatology Association. His main immediate task as President of the 25th World Congress of Dermatology in 2023 is to organise and present an amazing and memorable meeting.
